The Catcher in the Rye is a verbose and rather mundane monologue. The main character, Holden Caufield, is an immature 17-year-old of average intelligence, and we’re trapped listening to his inner ramblings for the entire book. He is constantly complaining, and the other characters in the book he interacts with dislike him for the most part.

The plot arc is just as mundane:
- To Holden, everything is either depressing or corny.
- He is kicked out of school for not applying himself.
- He blames the school for being ‘full of phonies’ (p.90) for his failure.
- He goes to New York for a few days.
- He calls a bunch of people who either don’t want to hang out with him or regret it later.
- He goes home and hangs out with his sister.

Maybe this is stereotyping, but to me, depressed kids are usually highly intelligent. I kind of expected Holden to at least making interesting observations about the world around him.

Maybe this book was a classic in another era. To me, The Catcher in the Rye is utterly forgettable. Holden’s inner struggle to find his place, his way, or his meaning in the world, while noble, is uninteresting.

I am really happy with this bathroom scale! The clean design makes it very versatile with different types of decor. The glass is thick and sturdy and the numbers are large and clear. I also like that it’s very easy to use- just tap on the glass to “wake” it up, and the reading is lit for a good amount of time. Very worthwhile purchase.

I like this scale for its consistent accuracy and easy to read display. A bonus is its sleek look–no ridges to keep clean like my old scale which gave 4 different weights when stepped on 4 times in succession.

Apparently the batteries that came with it were old because the display said “Lo” and wouldn’t register my weight. After I bought and inserted new batteries, it worked just fine.

It takes a hard heel thump rather than a light tap to turn on but I consider that a minor issue.

I thought the cost reasonable and wouldn’t hesitate recommending it.

Not only do I have music, photos, and internet but the applications are out of this world fun and many are free. I love the portability of this thing and just discovered the voice control function which had my ecstatic. Do yourself a favor. If you buy one piece of technology this year, buy an ipod touch. I was debating on whether to buy and ipod or zune and I know I made the right decision with the ipod. I am so happy with this thing you have no idea. If you have any doubts. let them go because this is the real deal. The touch screen is so accurate it’s scary. Buy the ipod touch. You will not be disappointed.

I’ve had this now for a couple of years and have logged countless miles on it in rain, cold, heat, etc. A very durable watch. GPS is fairly accurate (only off by less than 1/10 of a mile after any 5K. I know that these have gotten smaller, but for the money, this is a very wise purchase! A must have for any runner who wants to log their runs or to review races, runs, etc.

You know, I first tried to read this book when it first came out and it offended me. Now all these years later, I picked volumes 1 and 2 up at my local library. Still feel the same way. There are so many wonderful sacred texts to read why would anyone waste their time with this? The real clincher for me came in volume two when he is discussing sex and children. And I quote: (Page 105)

” In some societies, parents couple in full view of their offspring-and what could give children a greater sense of the beauty and the wonder and the pure joy and the total okayness of the sexual expression of love than this?”

This simply outrages me. This guy is one sick puppy.
