I’m very pleased with the bike. Quality components, easy assembly, great looks. I love the very low 1st gear (like granny-low), will be good for pulling a trailer bike. Brakes are amazing – very short stops. Assembly instructions were only okay, but it goes together like any other bike. Good metric allen wrenches, a philips screwdriver, and an adjustable wrench made for easy assembly (not included). Well-packaged, no damage to the bike, I think I spent more time unpacking than assembling. Click shifter works well on rear, front shifter needs to be coaxed (like most front deraillers). I look forward to longer rides.

The Help is about the relationships between black and white people in the 60’s. In a small town in Mississipi, most families have a black maid who end up raising their children and cooking their meals and doing their cleaning. At the center of the story is Aibileeen, who works for the dense Miss Leefolt, Minny, a very precocious but endearing maid who is known for her mouth who comes to work for Miss Celia, and Skeeter, who decides to write a book about the maids and their relationships with their bosses. This book was powerful and very well written, and contains many characters who are multi faceted. I particlarly enjoyed Minny’s section.

I would give this vacuum an average rating. It seems to pick up well, but it leaves unsightly tracks from the wheels and roller brush on the carpet. If I had it to do over again, I would not buy this vacuum as my main one, maybe only as a spare for my basement. It was inexpensive though, so you do get what you pay for.

Think of a juvenile James Bond with an IQ beyond Einstein’s. Then throw him in a world of technologically superior fairies, and the fun can begin.

And this is really what Artemis Fowl is about, first and foremost: FUN.

Some might say it reverts too easily to stereotypes, but I am not sure whether this is actually a bad thing. Too much depth, too much complexity in character development, might have taken the umpf out of the sheer fun ride I’ve had in reading Artemis.

The basic idea of the book–for those new to Fowl’s world–is that there is an underground world of fairies who go to great pains to keep their existence a secret from the human upper world. Until Artemis, a young criminal master mind, tracks down the fairies and upsets the whole balance of the worlds above and below ground.

In summary: Don’t expect the symbolism of Narnia, the metaphysics of His Dark Materials, or the detail of Harry Potter. Artemis Fowl doesn’t have any of those. Instead, expect to be blasted away by the explosive energy of a fun novel.

I have used a pedometer on and off for years. When our office offered a fitness challenge, I knew I wanted to participate. The counting and tracking of steps was essential, so my search began for a reliable pedometer. I checked the local “mart” and sports stores, and did research online. I determined the Omron HJ-112 was the best choice. I carefully calibrated the essential information, and attached it to my pants. The first thing I noticed was that it did a good job of not mistakenly identifying random movement as steps which was a plus. I thought that I was getting an accurate reading until I realized it wasn’t actually counting all my steps. My daughter, who was also participating in the challenge, commented that I don’t have much hip movement when I walk and that’s why it wasn’t working properly. She was right! Her pedometer, which cost significantly less, did a far better job of accurately counting her steps.

Another issue I have with this pedometer is the size. It is bulky and less than discreet. A diabetic family member remarked that it resembles a blood glucose meter or insulin pump. I believe the unwieldy size contributes to the fact that it does not stay securely clipped to clothing. I have lost it repeatedly which is annoying, and contributes to the less than accurate step totals.

I would not recommend this pedometer, nor would I purchase it again.
